It’s possible to make your hardwood floors solid black if you really want them to be that dark, but most of our clients choose something lighter like a black/white hardwax oil mix,  or Jacobean/Ebony stain mix or a Coffee brown color. Not sure what is happening there sorry. Put them in every room and live with them for a few days seeing how they look in different light and at different times of the day. No you can use either type of finish over a water based stain. The rest of the floor looks great. Did they water pop the floors before staining? Best bet would be to get someone out to have a look for you and give you a quote after seeing them. But at the same time, if you’ve invested so much into such a beautiful hardwood floor, you should be looking after it and caring for it properly… so you wouldn’t let it get too dirty anyways right :). I actually used two coats on this sample as well even though it’s advertised as a one coat stain. If you’re concerned about compatibility always do a test sample to make sure. If you use a high-end professional grade finish system, either a quality hardwax oil or a commercial grade water-based finish system, like we do here at Tadas Wood Flooring, then you won’t have this issue to worry about.
